Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܩܪܛܝܣܐ, from Ancient Greek χᾰ́ρτης (khártēs, sheet of paper); also borrowed into Arabic قُرْطَاس (qurṭās) and Hebrew כַּרְטִיס (kartís). Doublet of ܟܲܪܛܵܐ (karṭā, card).
