Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sanskrit *आस्फरति (āspharati, swells), from आ- (ā-) +‎ स्फरति (spharati, expands), from the root स्फर् (sphar), a variant of स्फुर् (sphur, to spurn, erupt), from Proto-Indo-European *sperH- (to kick, push away, make a rash movement). Cognate with Gujarati આફરવું (āpharvũ, to be swollen).
