Probably from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀇𑀁𑀤𑀉𑀭 (*iṃdaüra), from an earlier *𑀇𑀁𑀤𑀯𑀼𑀭 (*iṃdavura), from Sanskrit इन्द्र (índra, Indra) +‎ पुर (púra, town, fortress), literally town of Indra. Compare Marathi इंदूर (indūr).
