From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ćánas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čánas, from *kanH- (to love, take pleasure in), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *kenh₂- (to be pleased, enjoy), infixed nasal stem of *keh₂- (to like, wish).
