Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀁𑀟𑀸𑀭 (piṃḍāra, cowherd), from Sanskrit पिण्डार (piṇḍāra, beggar, buffalo-herd, cowherd). Compare Old Hindi पिरारा (pirārā), Marathi पेंढार (peṇḍhār).
