Hindi[edit]

Etymology[edit]

CDIAL gives a derivation from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀨𑀼𑀲𑀤𑀺 (phusadi) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮- (-la-) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit स्पृशति (spṛśati), from स्पृश् (spṛś). McGregor assumes a connection to फुस (phus, whisper, hiss).
