Borrowed from Classical Persian بیابان (biyābān), from Middle Persian [script needed] (wydʾpʾn /⁠wiyābān⁠/, astray, wandering; desert). Compare Punjabi ਬੀਆਬਾਨ (bīābān) / بیابان (beyābān), Gujarati બિયાબાન (biyābān).
