Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain.

Traditionally taken to be from Proto-Indo-European *wrek-, and compared with Ancient Greek ῥάκος (rhákos, rag, wrinkle), Latvian rakt (to dig).[1] Similarities to Czech vráska (wrinkle) have also been noted. Perhaps related to Avestan 𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬙𐬗𐬀𐬉𐬨 (uruuatcaēm, I will tear it apart). These proposals have their share of phonetic and/or semantic difficulties. Cross-contamination and conflation with similar roots may have obscured the true origins of the root.[2][3]

Not related to Sanskrit वृक्ष (vṛkṣa, tree).

Pronunciation[edit]
