Borrowed from Prakrit 𑀲𑀺𑀁𑀕𑀺𑀯𑁂𑀭 (siṃgivera), with influence of शृङ्ग (śṛṅga, horn), derived from Dravidian. Compare Tamil இஞ்சிவேர் (iñcivēr), from இஞ்சி (iñci, ginger) + வேர் (vēr, root).
