From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰayman, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéy-mn̥ ~ *ǵʰi-mén-s (winter). Related to हेमन्त (hemanta, winter) and हिम (hima, snow); see there for cognates.
