Inherited from Early Assamese অকল (okolo), একল (ekolo), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀏𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀮𑁆𑀮 (ekkalla), from Sanskrit এক্কল (ekkala). Cognate with Bengali একলা (ekola), Sylheti ꠄꠇꠟꠣ (exola), Hindi अकेला (akelā).
