Inherited from Sanskrit चित्रक (citraka, leopard), a compound of चित्र (citra, variegated, spotted) + काय (kāya, body), referring to the spots on the fur of a leopard. Cognate with Hindi चीता (cītā), Gujarati ચિત્તો (citto), Marathi चित्ता (cittā).
