Inherited from Middle Bengali জোশ (jōś), borrowed from Classical Persian جوش (jōš, excitement; agitation; boiling), nominalized from جوشیدن (jōšīdan, to boil), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *yāsáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *yos-éye-ti, causative of *yes- (to boil, foam). Compare Hindustani جوش (joś) / जोश (joś).
