Inherited from Middle Bengali জোশ (jōś), borrowed from Classical Persian جوش (jōš, “excitement; agitation; boiling”), nominalized from جوشیدن (jōšīdan, “to boil”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *yāsáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *yos-éye-ti, causative of *yes- (“to boil, foam”). Compare Hindustani جوش (joś) / जोश (joś).
