The verb is inherited from Prakrit 𑀥𑀸𑀯𑀇 (dhāvaï), from Sanskrit धावति (dhāvati, to run, flee), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *dʰā́wati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰā́wati, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéw-e-ti, from *dʰew- (to run, flow).

The noun is inherited from Sanskrit *धाव (dhāva), nominalized from धावति (dhāvati) (above).

Doublet of ধাবন (dhabon), উধাও (udhaō), ধোয়া (dhōẇa), ধোবা (dhōba), and ধোপা (dhōpa).
