Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀚𑀸𑀡 (sajāṇa), from Sanskrit *सज्ञान (sajñāna). Cognates include Assamese সিয়ান (xian), Bengali শিয়ানা (śiẏana), Hindi सयान (sayān), Kumaoni सयाणो (sayāṇo), Nepali सियाना (siyānā), Odia ସିଆଣ (siaṇô), Punjabi سیْاݨا (siyāṇā), and Sindhi سِياٹو (siāṇo).
