From Proto-Tai *najꟲ (“this”). Cognate with Thai นี้ (níi), Lao ນີ້ (nī), Northern Thai ᨶᩦ᩶, Khün ᨶᩦ᩶, and Lü ᦓᦲᦰ (ni) or ᦓᦲᧉ (nii²).
