From Proto-Tai *ɟaŋᴬ (to hate), from Middle Chinese (MC tsong). Cognate with Thai ชัง (chang), Northern Thai ᨩᩢ᩠ᨦ, Lao ຊັງ (sang), Shan ၸင်း (tsáng), Zhuang caengz.
