Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *ɔ̀-sã́, possibly from ọ̀- (nominalizing prefix) +‎ sán (to shine powerfully, to strike, to be powerful). Cognate with Igala ọ̀rọ́ka, Itsekiri ọ̀sọ́n.
