Etymology[edit]

Apparently originally the masculine nominative plural of an otherwise unattested adjective ἄνεως (áneōs) (perhaps from ἀν- (an-) +‎ αὔω (aúō, to shout)), and in some contexts still interpretable as such; but in other contexts it can only be an adverb.

Pronunciation[edit]
