Etymology[edit]

Generally taken as deriving from ἀ- (a-, not) +‎ σφάλλω (sphállō, to fall, cast down), under the assumption that it denoted the material that protects walls from tumbling down. However, according to Beekes, the word is rather Pre-Greek.
