Etymology[edit]

Latin attilus (kind of fish) shows a general resemblance. Farther away are Latvian āte and Lithuanian atìs (turbot). Strömberg rather envisages derivation from ἔταλον (étalon, yearling), while DELG calls both suggestions improbable.
