Etymology

According to Beekes, to this word belongs the poetic adjective λῡγαῖος (lūgaîos, “dark”), which differs in anlaut; an explanation remains to be found. Furnée assumes a prothetic vowel, for which there is little or no evidence. Nevertheless, the co-occurrence of λῡγαῖος (lūgaîos) and ἠλυγαῖος (ēlugaîos) is remarkable. The word might be Pre-Greek.
