Etymology[edit]
From Middle Chinese 掛礙 (MC kweaH ngojH), translation of Sanskrit आवरण (āvaraṇa, “covering; hiding; obscuring; obstructing”) or चित्तावरण (cittāvaraṇa, literally “thought-covering”).
Due to varying speeds of chanting sutras, particularly the Heart Sutra where this term is attested, the ke or both ke and ge may be long-pronounced, as seen in the alternative readings.
Noun[edit]
