Etymology

First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 새〯매〯 (Yale: sǎymǎy). From 새 (sae, “bird”) +‎ 매 (mae, “hawk”).

• (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA^(key): [ˈsʰɛ(ː)mɛ] ~ [ˈsʰe̞(ː)me̞]
• Phonetic hangul: [새(ː)매/세(ː)메]
  • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
