Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Sino-Korean word from (sexual) + (advanced) + (country), coined due to the phonetic similarity with 선진국 (先進國, seonjin'guk, “developed country”).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈsʰɘ(ː)ŋd͡ʑinɡuk̚]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
