Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Hellenic *wóikos, from Proto-Indo-European *wóyḱos (settlement, homestead, village). Cognate with Ancient Greek οἶκος (oîkos, house, home; household, family), Latin vīcus (village), Sanskrit विश् (víś, settlement, dwelling-place), from the root *weyḱ- (to settle; settlement, tribe).
