Etymology[edit]
From the verbal root 𐬫𐬀𐬰 (yaz, “to worship, honor, venerate”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁yaǵ- (“to worship, revere, sacrifice”). The nominative form is 𐬫𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬙𐬋 (yazatō), pl. 𐬫𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬙𐬂𐬢𐬵𐬋 (yazatåŋhō), reflecting Proto-Iranian *yazatah and pl. *yazatāhah.
Compare Sanskrit यजत (yajata).
