Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Common Turkic *tuman (“smoke, fog, mist”), equivalent to 𐱃𐰆 (tu-, “to enclose”) + 𐰢𐰣 (-man). Cognate with Turkish duman, Uzbek tuman, Bashkir томан (toman), Yakut туман (tuman). Compare also Russian тума́н (tumán), a Turkic borrowing.
