Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *dʰugtr-yo- plus a suffix *-ata/i-, from *dʰwégh₂tr̥ (“daughter”). According to Kloekhorst, it is a borrowing from Luwian 𒁺𒌓𒋻𒊑𒄿𒀀𒋾𒅖.

Notes

While the first part of this word looks clearly related to the word family in Indo-European meaning “daughter”, which suggests that it is derived from an earlier word for “daughter”, it is unlikely to have been the Hittite word for “daughter”, 𒌉𒊩 (DUMU.MUNUS) (acc.sg. 𒌉𒊩𒆷𒀭 (DUMU.MUNUS-la-an)), which, though never fully written phonetically, appears too dissimilar to be considered cognate.
