Etymology[edit]

Modern Greek coinage which follows patterns set out in such word groups as πηλαλώ (pilaló, run)πηλάλα (pilála, running) and κεφάλι (kefáli, head)κεφάλα (kefála, big head).

  1. added to a verb, to create nouns or adverbs describing an action or the resulting action:
    τρέχω (trécho, run) + ‎-άλα (-ála) → ‎τρεχάλα (trechála, running, at full speed)
    κρεμώ (kremó, hang) + ‎-άλα (-ála) → ‎κρεμάλα (kremála, noose, gallows)
    φεύγω (févgo, leave) + ‎-άλα (-ála) → ‎φευγάλα (fevgála, flight, escape)
    φουσκώνω (fouskóno, inflate, blow up) + ‎-άλα (-ála) → ‎φουσκάλα (fouskála, blister)
