Blend of (grandfather; mister; lord) +‎ adiê (sky; heaven). Cognate with Jarai Ơi Adai. Compare Vietnamese ông trời (the Jade Emperor, literally the Heavenly Lord), Vietnamese Chúa Trời and Vietnamese Thiên Chúa (Yahweh, literally the Heavenly Lord).
