From Ancient Greek πλατύς (platús), from Proto-Indo-European *pl̥th₂us, zero grade of *pleth₂os (whence πλάτος (plátos)). Cognates include Sanskrit पृथु (pr̥thú), Avestan [script needed] (pǝrǝʮu) and Latvian plats; compare English flat and Old Norse flatr.
