Etymology[edit]

From *baba- +‎ *-lōną, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰa-bʰa-, perhaps a reduplication of Proto-Indo-European *bʰā- (to say), or a variant of onomatopoeic *baba- (to talk vaguely, mumble), or a merger of the two.
