From Proto-Indo-European *dʰail- (part, watershed). The Indo-European root is also the source of Proto-Baltic *daili- (Lithuanian dailiti (divide)), Proto-Slavic *dělъ (Old Church Slavonic дѣлити (děliti), Russian делить (delitʹ)). Cognate with *dailą, *dailǭ.
