Proto-Germanic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *kadʰ- (to cover, protect) and compared to Latin cassis (helmet). However, Kroonen reconstructs the Proto-Indo-European form as *koHt-ó- instead, and links the root to Proto-Germanic *hattuz (hat); see there for more.[1]
