From Middle High German huot, from Old High German huot, from Proto-Germanic *hōdaz, from Proto-Indo-European *kadʰ- (“to protect”). Cognate with German Hut, Dutch hoed, English hood.

- Huat is not commonly used for hats that could be called a “cap” (Kåppn, Kappl, or Kapperl) or a “bonnet” (Haubn).
