Etymology[edit]

Unknown; suggested to be from Proto-Indo-European *spreg- on the basis of Albanian shpreh (to express, voice). Alternatively cognate with Old Norse spraka (to crackle, patter), Lithuanian spragù (to crackle, patter).[1]
