Proto-Slavic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably related to Lithuanian narvýtis (to persist, to be stubborn), possibly Ancient Greek νωρεῖ pl (nōreî, energy, urge). Further origin perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ner- (vitality, drive) (the root of *h₂nḗr (man, person)).

(Some) Western South Slavic descendants are etymologically problematic. Snoj tentatively derives them from related *naravь, *narava[1] < *nar- + *-avь, *-ava. Compare Lithuanian nóras (will).
