Etymology[edit]

From earlier *rudsъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *raudsas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rowdʰ-s-o-, from *h₁rewdʰ- (red). Morphologically *rud- +‎ *-sъ.

Compare Baltic: Lithuanian raũsvas, rùsvas, rusė́ti, ruslės, Latvian rusls, rûsa.

Compare Indo-European: Latin russus.
