From Proto-Balto-Slavic *rūˀdjas, from Pre-Balto-Slavic *h₁ruHdʰ-yo-s, lengthened grade of Proto-Indo-European *h₁rudʰ-yo-s, from *h₁rewdʰ- (red). Morphologically *ryd- +‎ *-jь.

Balto-Slavic cognates include Lithuanian rūdìs, rūdýti, rūdė́ti, rūdýnas, rūdijà, rùdis.
