Translingual[edit]

Arnica montana

Etymology[edit]

Medieval Latin, of unknown origin. First attested in Matthaeus Silvaticus, possibly identical to Matthaeus Platearius. Because both heavily employed Arabic sources it gave rise to speculations of Arabic origin; from words existing in Arabic, دَرَوْنَج (darawnaj, leopardsbane) is the closest candidate, whence also Doronicum descends. Other origins suggested include a derivation of Latin *arna (lamb), corrupt of agna, or a deformation of Latin ptarmica (sneezewort) from Ancient Greek πταρμική (ptarmikḗ, sneezewort), from πτάρνυμαι (ptárnumai, to sneeze).

Proper noun[edit]

Arnica f

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Asteraceae – the arnica plants.
