Etymology[edit]

New Latin, of unknown origin. Possibly ultimately from Arabic ارنبيه (arnabiyah) (the name of a plant). Other origins suggested include Latin arna (lamb) or from Latin ptarmica (sneezewort) from Ancient Greek πταρμική (ptarmikḗ, sneezewort), from πτάρνυμαι (ptárnumai, to sneeze).
