Etymology[edit]

From being being assigned B.1.1.529.1 when the second variant occurred, and then shortened. Pango notation does not officially support 4 sublevels, leading to a need to renumber "B.1.1.529.1", thus shortened to a new base "BA" for "B.1.1.529" and ".1" becoming "BA.1"

Proper noun[edit]
