Etymology[edit]

First attested as Berswert in 1528. Borrowed from West Frisian Barsum, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Beer (a personal name) and wert (artificial mound used for habitation). The second element was gradually replaced by hēm (home, settlement).
