Etymology[edit]

befrielse (liberation) +‎ torg (square). Originally called "Midan Ismailia", after the 19th-century ruler Khedive Ismail, it was renamed after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. Midan Tahrir (التحرير) means Liberation Square.
