Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Potentially attested as benmele in 1178, attested with certainty as in bemela in 1189. Etymology unclear. Potentially of non-Germanic origins. A proposed derivation from a compound of beemd (pasture, field) and lo (light forest) clashes with the oldest attestations.
