Etymology[edit]

Earlier Biełgoraj, from biały (white) +‎ Goraj, the name of the nearby village from which the town's founders hailed. The first element became Bił- under the influence of Ukrainian (the town is located around 40 miles from the present-day border with Ukraine); compare Ukrainian бі́лий (bílyj, white).[1]
