Etymology[edit]

Calque of Ukrainian Бі́лгородська наро́дна респу́бліка (Bílhorodsʹka naródna respúblika), which in turn was based on Ukrainian Луга́нська наро́дна респу́бліка (Luhánsʹka naródna respúblika, Luhansk People's Republic) or Ukrainian Доне́цька наро́дна респу́бліка (Donécʹka naródna respúblika, Donetsk People's Republic).

Proper noun[edit]

Bilhorod People's Republic

  1. (humorous, Internet slang) "Bilhorod People's Republic"; a fictional quasi-state located in Belgorod, southern Russia.

Usage notes[edit]

The term is used by some pro-Ukrainian netizens in Internet memes to refer the city of Belgorod with that term, to mock the pro-Russian militants in Donetsk and Luhansk.
