Etymology[edit]
First attested as blitha in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Blije, derived in turn from a hydronym cognate to English blithe or, alternatively, from a compound of Old Frisian blij (“silt”) and hem (“village”). Compare Blijham.
