From French Copte, from (Egyptian) Arabic قفط (qufṭ), قبط (qubṭ, Copt), back-formation from qufṭī, qifṭī, qubṭī, qibṭī 'Copts' [script?], from Coptic ⲅⲩⲡⲧⲓⲟⲥ (gyptios, Egyptian), ⲕⲩⲡⲧⲁⲓⲟⲥ (kyptaios, Egyptian), from Late Ancient Greek Αἰγύπτιος (Aigúptios), from earlier Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos).
