Borrowed from the Malé Latin form of Dhivehi ދަނބިދޫ (daᵐbidū), from earlier 𑤞𑤢𑤳𑤝𑤳𑤩𑤳 (dhabuduvu /⁠daᵐbuduvu⁠/), ultimately from Sanskrit जम्बुद्वीप (jambudvīpa, Rose-apple island).
